The Belgian Nationality Code opens up several routes (attribution at birth, declaration of nationality, naturalisation), each with its own conditions as to residence, integration and the documents to be produced. A poorly prepared file or a missing civil status record is often enough to lead to a refusal. Where the public prosecutor issues a negative opinion, the application can be defended before the court.
